MP Ajith P. Perera said he was unable to attend Parliament on time to initiate the adjournment debate on the Israel-Iran conflict, after his vehicle was involved in an accident earlier today.
In a Facebook post, Perera confirmed he was unharmed and that no others were injured in the incident. He said he had to attend to matters following the accident, which delayed his arrival in Parliament by four minutes.
Parliament was adjourned until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, after Perera—who had proposed the debate—was not present at the scheduled time to move the motion.
When MP Nizam Kariyappar attempted to proceed on Perera’s behalf, Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake and Minister Vijitha Herath objected, citing procedural rules that a motion cannot be moved by a member on behalf of another.
The disagreement led to a brief tense situation on the floor, prompting Deputy Speaker Rizvi Sally to adjourn the session. (Newswire)
