Opposition and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader MP Sajith Premadasa says a government that disregards the law is not just incompetent, it is dangerous.
MP Premadasa pointed out that the Supreme Court’s decisions against the appointment of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the selection of VFS for the new visa system, and the violation of fundamental rights by not holding the local elections are glaring warnings.
“A government that cannot uphold the law cannot build a nation. It dismantles the very structures that ensure our stability. We must act now before this lawlessness undermines our economy, our security, and our future. This is a fight worth fighting,” he added, in a statement on ‘X’.
MP Sajith Premadasa’s remarks come after the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka today ordered the National Election Commission to take measures to hold the postponed Local Government Elections, immediately.
Issuing its verdict on the case today, the Supreme Court also ruled that the President, as the Minister of Finance, and the members of the Election Commission had violated the fundamental rights of voters through the postponement of the 2023 Local Government Elections.
This is the latest verdict of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka against a decision of the current administration.
Earlier in August, the Supreme Court issued an Interim Order temporarily halting the Cabinet’s decision to outsource its visa application process to GBS Technology Services & IVS Global- FZCO, VFS VF Worldwide Holdings LTD led consortium. The Court had also issued an interim injunction on the implementation of the agreements with the two foreign entities.
Previously in July, an interim order was issued by the Supreme Court restraining Deshabandu Tennakoon from exercising the powers, functions, and responsibilities of the office of IGP. (Newswire)
