Harak Kata’s Rs 300 mn allegation : Police launch probe

Police have launched an inquiry into serious allegations made by notorious underworld figure Nadun Chithaka Wickremeratne, alias Harak Kata, that he was asked to pay a ransom of Rs. 300 million by former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles and suspended IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.

Harak Kata made the claim while being escorted from the Colombo Court Complex yesterday, stating he remains detained at the Tangalle Old Prison because he refused to make the payment. “There are so many things to say. I will reveal them then,” he told reporters before being taken back into custody.

He also alleged that his continued detention costs Rs. 10 million per month.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had extradited Harak Kata and Salindu Malshika alias Kudu Salindu from Madagascar in March 2023. Since then, he has been held under the custody of the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID).
