The special Committee of Inquiry investigating Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon has rejected preliminary objections raised on his behalf, clearing the way for the inquiry to proceed.
The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice P.P. Surasena and including Justice W.M.N.P. Iddawala and National Police Commission Chairman E.W.M. Lalith Ekanayake, held its session today at Parliament.
It was the first appearance by Tennakoon before the panel.
Tennakoon was presented with a charge sheet containing 23 allegations, which include accusations of serious misconduct and abuse of power.
His legal representative, R.S. Weerawikrama, submitted three preliminary objections and two related motions. These were challenged by Additional Solicitor General Dilip Peiris and Deputy Solicitor General Rajitha Perera, representing the Attorney General’s Department.
The committee ruled unanimously that the objections lacked merit and confirmed the inquiry would continue. The next hearing is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on May 28 at Committee Room No. 8 in Parliament. (Newswire)
