The Department of Inland Revenue has issued a warning following reports of individuals posing as department officials and illegally collecting money from businesses.
According to the department, these incidents have been reported in areas including Colombo, Panadura, Negombo, Wennappuwa, and Minuwangoda. The individuals in question visit businesses claiming to collect taxes but are not authorized to do so.
The Department of Inland Revenue clarified that tax payments should only be made through deposits into bank accounts under the name of the Commissioner General of Inland Revenue.
The department stated that no cash or cheques are collected directly by their officers.
The public has been advised not to hand over money to these individuals and to report any such incidents to the police. The department is coordinating with law enforcement to address the issue. (Newswire)
