A group of independent councillors from the Matugama Pradeshiya Sabha who have pledged support to the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) allege that the National People’s Power (NPP) attempted to buy their backing.
A representative of the group told reporters they possess CCTV footage showing an offer made by an NPP member, though the footage has not been released publicly.
“The initial discussion was held at my residence with an NPP minister. I have CCTV footage of that meeting. The next two discussions took place in Colombo,” the spokesperson said, adding that their decision was not motivated by financial gain.
According to the councillor, the group was first offered Provincial Council nominations, followed by a cash offer of Rs. 8 million each. He claimed the NPP continues to make similar proposals.
The councillors said their decision to support the SJB was driven by a desire to develop Matugama. (Newswire)
