Dubai Capitals have confirmed that Dasun Shanaka was medically cleared to play in the ILT20 2025 season only after passing a fitness test on February 2.
Shanaka, who reportedly suffered a neck injury while playing in Sri Lanka, underwent a clinical examination by physiotherapist Deep Tomar, which confirmed mild tenderness but no significant discomfort, Dubai Capitals said.
After receiving medical clearance, he played for Dubai Capitals in their February 2 ILT20 fixture.
However, his participation has now come under scrutiny after it was revealed that he left a Premier League Tier A match for Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) before its completion.
The match referee had reportedly been informed that Shanaka had suffered an injury during the game against Moors Sports Club.
SLC CEO Ashley de Silva confirmed that the board would investigate the circumstances of Shanaka’s departure.
SSC sources stated that Shanaka does not regularly play red-ball cricket but voluntarily joined the match as SSC was facing relegation.
According to SSC team management, he left the game only after receiving a medical report advising him to rest.
Later that evening, he traveled to Dubai, expecting to be available for the ILT20 according to his contract.
However, since he felt fit to play, he underwent a final medical assessment on the same night and was cleared to take the field for Dubai Capitals later that day.
With conflicting reports about his injury status and departure from the SSC match, SLC’s inquiry will seek to determine whether all protocols were properly followed or if any rules were violated. (NewsWire)
