Kotmale bus accident : SLTB to disburse Rs. 7.7 Mn in compensation

The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has provided a detailed account of the support and compensation measures extended to victims of the fatal Geradi Ella bus accident that occurred on May 11, 2025, killing 23 people and injuring 61.

Chairman of the Board Jeewaka Prasanna Purasinghe issuing a statement outlined the SLTB’s response, which included assistance with funeral arrangements for the deceased and medical support for the injured.

According to the statement, the President’s Secretariat granted Rs. 1 million to each of the 23 deceased victims’ families. 

Additionally, the SLTB provided Rs. 25,000 in compensation to 20 families, while 46 of the injured received Rs. 10,000 each. Legal issues have delayed compensation for the remaining injured individuals, the SLTB said.

The Board also funded hospital discharge transport and contributed to some funeral transport arrangements, including those of the deceased driver, Kelum Chandika. 

Chandika’s family received Rs. 100,000 in compensation and gratuity, with all payments completed.

As all SLTB buses are insured under Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC) General Ltd, it has agreed to disburse Rs. 225,000 to each deceased victim over the age of 18, Rs. 100,000 to those under 18, and Rs. 50,000 to each injured passenger. 

The total compensation package from SLIC amounts to Rs. 7,725,000. The SLTB stated that these funds will be distributed to the victims’ families upon receipt.

Compensation for the bus driver and conductor, in accordance with the Labour Act, is also being processed through SLIC, with relevant procedures underway. (Newswire)
