Major push to upgrade Helmet Standards in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan government is preparing to introduce stricter measures on helmet standards in a bid to reduce the high number of fatalities resulting from motorcycle accidents, Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Ratnayake announced.

Speaking during a public awareness event at the Makumbura Expressway entrance, Minister Ratnayake noted that motorcycle-related accidents continue to account for the majority of road deaths in the country.

“In light of this concerning trend, we are now working towards implementing updated regulations on helmet quality,” he said, adding that the government will soon hold discussions with helmet manufacturers and importers to ensure safety standards are met.

The Minister stressed that improving helmet quality is part of a broader government initiative to enhance road safety and protect lives. He also reiterated that enforcing existing laws on the maximum passenger capacity in three-wheelers is crucial to minimizing risk on the roads.
