Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake highlighted the system change in the country, revealing that he had recently been inspected by Police officers irrespective of his ministerial portfolio.
Addressing a political rally, Minister Rathnayake said he was stopped by the Police for a random inspection, while en route to Mawanella, during which his driving licences and relevant documents were checked.
“Usually, when a big vehicle is stopped, the Police officer receives a couple of phone calls after which the vehicle is immediately released. When I drove to Mawanella during the Avurudu holidays, I was stopped by a Police sergeant. I handed over my driving licence and other documents. After inspecting them, he told me to leave. I still don’t think he realises that he checked the licence of the Transport Minister,” he said.
Minister Bimal Rathnayake said, however, if this had occurred eight months ago, then the Police officer would have been transferred to Madagascar.
Emphasizing that the people’s choice has brought about equal law to the President, Prime Minister, ministers, and the public, he said the implementation of equal law has commenced to a certain extent in the country.
“I acknowledge that this hasn’t been fully implemented. We still face incidents of unfair treatment at government offices, where an ordinary man is made to wait, while a man in a suit is served tea in the higher official’s room. But, we know this is slowly changing,” he said.
Stating that as this system has already changed to some extent from the President to ministers, Minister Rathnayake said it will change in Municipal and Urban Councils after the Local Government Elections. (Newswire)
