Minister of Environment Dr. Dammika Paatabendige and Deputy Minister Anton Jayakody yesterday visited the Polpithigama area in the Nikaweratiya Wildlife Zone to observe an elephant currently suffering from a serious illness. The ministers instructed officials to expedite medical treatment and provide all necessary facilities for the elephant’s care.
The visit was also attended by Director of Wildlife Health at the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Dr. Tharaka Prasad, department officers, local police personnel, environmental organizations, and area residents.
A veterinary team from the University of Peradeniya, along with wildlife veterinarians, has already commenced treatment. Blood and semen samples have been collected, and scanning tests and further medical examinations are underway.
Based on preliminary test results and medical reports, the ministers directed that treatment should proceed without delay. They also instructed the Department of Wildlife Conservation to provide regular updates on the elephant’s condition and to ensure a structured treatment process. (Newswire)
