Ministry condemns “unjust” railway strike despite solutions being provided

The Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation has condemned the ongoing strike by Station Masters, calling it an “unjust and abrupt” action that has caused inconvenience to the public despite viable solutions being in place.

The strike, launched today (May 16), is based on two main demands – delays in scheduled five-year grade promotions and the lack of new recruitments. The Ministry revealed that Cabinet approval had already been granted on January 22, 2025, to fill 909 vacancies in the Railway Department, including 106 Station Masters, but delays in internal processes within the department have stalled implementation.

Furthermore, relevant recommendations regarding promotions were sent to the department on May 7, and arrangements are being made to send them for Public Service Commission approval next week.

The Ministry expressed disappointment that, instead of resolving internal inefficiencies through discussion, trade union action was initiated, raising suspicion that the real motive may be to pressure the government and disrupt public life. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining railway operations and addressing departmental shortcomings without delay. (Newswire)
