“My Husband is Innocent” Mahindananda’s wife pens lengthy letter

Senani Jayarathna, wife of former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and daughter of late Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, has publicly defended her husband following his recent conviction in a high-profile corruption case.

In a lengthy post shared via Aluthgamage’s official Facebook page, Jayarathna claimed her husband was innocent and alleged that the legal process under the current National People’s Power (NPP)-led government was politically influenced. She also questioned a recent remark by the Justice Minister, hinting that such a verdict may not have been delivered if the NPP was not in power.

Jayarathna further criticized social media users for spreading what she described as baseless allegations and character attacks on her husband.

Aluthgamage was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Colombo High Court for misappropriating Rs. 53 million in state funds during the Rajapaksa-era administration. Former Trade Minister Nalin Fernando, also convicted in the same case, received a 25-year sentence. The charges involved distributing carrom boards using public funds ahead of the 2015 presidential election. (Newswire)
