Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organizer MP Namal Rajapaksa has been named as the party’s official candidate for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
The decision was announced by SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam this morning at the party headquarters in Colombo.
SLPP MP and businessman Dhammika Perera, who was earlier tipped to be the SLPP candidate, on Tuesday had withdrawn from the race.
MP Perera, in a letter to SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam had informed the party of his decision to withdraw from the candidacy, citing personal reasons.
Meanwhile, former Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga, a close associate of the Rajapaksa camp, speaking to media said that certain circumstances have led Dhammika Perera to change his mind about the candidacy.
Members of the Rajapaksa-led SLPP have been making conflicting remarks over the party’s support for its Presidential candidate, amidst reports of rifts within the party. (Newswire)
