Namal responds to allegation MR Asked Top monk to tell President not to arrest wife

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has accused the government of fabricating claims involving former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a bid to distract from what he described as a failure to deliver on promises made during its first year in office.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Rajapaksa strongly denied recent reports alleging that former President Rajapaksa was seeking the intervention of senior Buddhist clergy (Ven. Mahanayaka Theros) to prevent the arrest of his family members. He described the claims as “entirely false” and a “disgraceful attempt” to drag respected religious leaders into political controversies.

The government, which has failed to deliver on the promises it made in its first year, is now desperately attempting to cover up its failures. In an effort to cover up, it has resorted to spreading false claims that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is seeking the help of the Ven. Mahanayaka Theros to prevent the arrest of his family members.

This is not just an attack on the former President, but a disgraceful attempt to drag our most respected religious leaders into political mudslinging. Such actions are deeply condemnable.

These claims are entirely false and clearly expose how the government is trying to politicize the police and even the judiciary to falsely implicate my family members.

My family and I have consistently faced politically motivated investigations without fear, and we continue to place our full trust in the country’s judicial system without seeking special treatment or favors.

It is time for the government to stop misleading the public and start fulfilling the promises it made. Resorting to false campaigns, character assassination, and politicizing law enforcement, tactics often associated with the NPP, only reveals their desperation to cover up their own failures and misdeeds.
