The National People’s Power (NPP) has now gained control of 192 local government bodies across Sri Lanka.
Out of these, the NPP secured a direct majority in 151 authorities, while they formed administrations in 41 other councils by achieving a post-election majority.
The NPP now governs several key municipal councils including Colombo, Kalutara, Galle, Kurunegala, Puttalam, and Nuwara Eliya.
In the Pradeshiya Sabhas of Agarapatana, Kotagala, and Nuwara Eliya, the Lanka Workers Congress (LWC) holds the chairmanship while the deputy chairmanships have been secured by NPP representatives.
Meanwhile, National Organizer of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Tissa Attanayake, has revealed that the combined opposition has secured control of 53 out of the 95 local councils where no party had a clear majority and where internal elections were held among elected members to determine control. Currently, 53 councils are governed by non-NPP parties, while the formation of administrations in four councils has been delayed due to disputes.
Sessions at the Seethawakapura Municipal Council, Seethawakapura Pradeshiya Sabha, and Mawathagama Pradeshiya Sabha were suspended due to internal conflicts during secret voting. The inaugural session of the Aratchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha has also been postponed due to administrative issues.
By June 20, administrations had been established in 245 out of the 339 local government bodies across the country. (Newswire)
