The sudden closure of the NEXT garment factory in Katunayake’s Free Trade Zone has left over 1,400 workers unemployed. Employees say they were informed via a WhatsApp message on May 19 night that the factory would cease operations with immediate effect.
The factory, which had operated for nearly 40 years, cited rising operational costs and continued financial losses as reasons for the decision. According to a company statement, 1,416 of the factory’s 2,825 workers were affected, while the remaining employees in other factories would retain their jobs.
The company has offered a severance package, including two months’ salary, but trade unions claim the closure violates existing agreements and lacked proper notice. (Newswire)
