Police have responded to a viral video circulating on social media showing a Sri Lankan man assaulting a foreign national, clarifying that the incident occurred in February 2024 in the Weligama area.
The victim, a Filipino tourist, had filed a complaint on February 14 last year, stating he was assaulted by an employee of a surfing training facility on Pelena beach after a dispute over filming.
The 24-year-old suspect was arrested the same day and produced before the Matara Magistrate’s Court. The case is scheduled to be heard again on September 11, 2025.
The Police Media Division emphasized that swift action is taken on complaints by foreign tourists, including those highlighted through social media. However, it noted that certain individuals or groups continue to circulate old incidents as if they are recent, misleading the public and damaging the country’s image.
Police have also warned that legal action will be taken against those who deliberately share outdated content to create false impressions or tarnish Sri Lanka’s reputation. (NewsWire)
