A comprehensive investigation has been launched into former Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sanjeeva Mahanama, who has been implicated in the staged shooting of former MP Uddika Premarathna, the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate was informed today.
According to the Lankadeepa newspaper, the CID’s Illegal Assets Investigation Division is probing Mahanama’s alleged illegal acquisition of property and wealth through suspected connections to drug trafficking.
The investigation follows a complaint by two drug dealers to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Anuradhapura Division, claiming that Mahanama’s illicitly acquired properties have been registered under various individuals’ names.
The complaint further alleges that Mahanama collaborated with drug peddlers in Anuradhapura to smuggle drugs.
The CID has requested reports from 11 law enforcement agencies, including the Bribery Commission, Fraud Investigation Unit, Narcotics Bureau, and Customs, to review previous offenses related to Mahanama and the complainants.
The complainants revealed that Mahanama had been facilitating the smuggling of heroin and “ice” for an extended period, with proceeds funneled through “easy cash” accounts in others’ names.
The Chief Magistrate, after reviewing the evidence, ordered that the investigation’s progress be submitted to the court promptly. (Newswire)
