A 22-year-old man was rescued from drowning at the Mount Lavinia beach on the evening of June 29, thanks to the swift action of the Police Lifeguard Unit attached to the Mount Lavinia Police Division.
According to police, the victim had gone for a swim when he was caught in a strong current and began to be dragged out to sea. Officers of the Police Lifeguard Unit who were on duty at the time responded immediately upon spotting the incident.
The rescue was carried out by Police Constables Sandaruwan (84523), Dhanuka (101557), and Dissanayake (102438), who managed to pull the young man to safety.
The individual, identified as a resident of Eriyagolla, Yakwil, was later confirmed to be in stable condition following the incident.
Police have urged beachgoers to exercise caution and adhere to safety instructions when swimming in the sea, especially during rough conditions. (Newswire)
