President Ranil Wickremesinghe, addressing the “Ekwa Jayagamu – Api Galle” rally held at the Galle Municipal Council Stadium, announced his candidacy for this year’s presidential election.
Wickremesinghe confirmed that he has already placed his deposit, marking the official start of his campaign.
“I took this decision after much deliberation. Two years ago, I was determined to take up this challenge, after seeing the suffering of the people,” he said addressing the gathering.
President Wickremsinghe said that a departure from traditional politics is necessary to take the country forward, adding that he now stands before the people as an independent candidate.
On Friday, shortly after the official announcement of the Presidential election to be held in September, President’s Counsel Ronald Perera placed bonds on behalf of President Ranil Wickremesinghe as an independent candidate. (Newswire)
