President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has shed light on the significant expenditure incurred by the state to provide luxurious residences for former Presidents, fueling public debate over the financial burden on taxpayers.

Speaking during an interview on Sirasa Satana, President Dissanayake revealed that former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga resides in a government-owned house valued at Rs. 2 million per month. Similarly, former President Maithripala Sirisena occupies a residence with a monthly valuation of Rs. 0.9 million.

The President also reiterated previous remarks regarding the residence of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, stating it is valued at Rs. 4.6 million per month and spans over one acre.

However, he acknowledged the actions of some former leaders in relinquishing such privileges. President Dissanayake expressed gratitude towards former President Ranil Wickremesinghe for not accepting a government house, while noting that former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa recently handed over his state residence. He further mentioned that former First Lady Hema Premadasa had also returned her official residence some time ago.

Addressing questions on whether government-provided housing for former Presidents would be withdrawn, President Dissanayake emphasized his administration’s commitment to reducing unnecessary expenditure on political figures. He stated that the public mandate he received calls for limiting such privileges and redirecting resources toward the nation’s development. (Newswire)
