Presidential election : EC sets deadline for campaign expense submissions

All candidates who contested the recent Presidential election are required to submit their campaign expense reports to the Election Commission by October 13, Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said.

The 38 candidates have been informed that the report must be submitted within 21 days of the election results being announced.

Once these reports are received, they will be made available for public viewing. If any discrepancies are found in the expense reports, individuals can file a complaint with the Police, backed by proper documentation, the Election Commission said.

With the new campaign finance laws being introduced with the recently concluded presidential election, the Commission has set the maximum campaign expenditure per voter at Rs. 109. With 17,140,354 voters in the electorate, the maximum amount a candidate can spend on campaigning is Rs. 1.86 billion.

Of this, candidates are allowed to spend up to 60% or Rs. 1.12 billion on their campaign expenses. For recognized political parties, the permissible spending limit is 40% of the total, amounting to Rs. 740 million. (Newswire)
