The acting Magistrate of Samanthurai has remanded the principal and a teacher until December 2 over the tragic deaths of five Madrasa students in Ampara. Two others were released on bail.
Police investigations revealed that the principal had instructed the students to be transported home in a tractor, which was swept away by floodwaters. The army had reportedly warned against using the road due to the dangerous conditions of the route.
The tractor, carrying 11 students, overturned in the strong currents. While five students were rescued, while five tragically drowned, one is till missing. Authorities have charged the suspects with negligence, and further investigations are underway.
