Rapid-Response Police bike unit deployed in South

A specialised motorcycle unit has been launched in the Southern Province under the leadership of Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) of Police Kitsiri Jayalath to enable rapid deployment in response to organised crime and gun violence.

The unit aims to quickly locate and apprehend suspects fleeing from crimes, particularly in incidents involving firearms, where swift response is critical. The move follows recent reports that many suspects involved in high-profile criminal activity have been apprehended shortly after going into hiding.

The new unit comprises 23 motorcycles—8 combat bikes from Tangalle and Matara divisions and 15 highway patrol bikes—and is staffed by approximately 46 officers.

An official briefing for the officers was held at the Matara District Secretariat Auditorium on May 26, 2025. (Newswire)
