Renovated Matale Hockey Stadium opened without any politicians

The renovated Nandimithra Ekanayake International Artificial Hockey Stadium in Matale was officially opened to the public today (December 5).

The renovation was made possible with an investment of Rs. 110 million by Sri Lanka Cricket and an additional Rs. 50 million contributed by the Asian Hockey Federation and the Ministry of Sports. The stadium now boasts a modern artificial hockey turf, bringing it up to international standards.

In a break from tradition, the opening ceremony was conducted without the presence of any special invitees or political figures. Instead, the event focused on sportsmanship, commencing with the All-Island Under-16 Boys’ and Girls’ Schools Hockey Tournament, which symbolized the handover of the stadium to the public.
