Rishad questions fund cut after pledging support to Sajith.

Leader of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) Rishad Bathiudeen has raised questions over the suspension of government funds for development projects in the North and East.

In a letter to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, MP Bathiudeen alleged that the termination of funds had taken place following his pledging support for Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa in the upcoming Presidential Polls.

MP Bathiudeen expressed gratitude to the President for having allocated a considerable amount of funds for development activities, considering the requests of the people, rural development societies, registered clubs, welfare societies and other community-based organisations from the area.

He, however, pointed out that letters have been sent to halt those projects immediately and to return those allocations without any legitimate reason.

“It is extremely doubtable that these actions had been taken following my announcement to support Presidential Candidate Hon. Sajith Premadasa in the upcoming Presidential Election. But still, as a Member of Parliament and the Leader of a registered political party, I have been working under Your Excellency for the past few decades. With that experience, I am specific that Your Excellency had always been truthful, diligent and a person with great moral & ethical character. As such, I hope that this sort of action had been taken by certain individuals and officials without Your Excellency’s knowledge unethically, due to the aforementioned reason,” MP Bathiudeen said.

MP Bathiudeen urged the President to intervene in the matter, by immediately terminating those letters and instructing relevant authorities to expedite the implementation of the projects.

The ACMC Leader also warned that he would be forced to appeal to the Election Commission concerning this kind of unethical activity if the relevant funds were returned, as it was a violation of the Election Law.

MP Bathiudeen’s letter to the President comes after the Presidential Secretariat had issued letters suspending the funds allocated for development projects in the Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, and Mannar districts in the North and Eastern provinces. (Newswire)
