Sri Lanka Police say a total of 1,758 kilograms of heroin and crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as ‘ice’) were seized during the months of April and May 2025, following major interdictions of multi-day fishing vessels attempting to smuggle narcotics into the country via maritime routes.
According to a statement issued by the Police Media Division, four separate raids carried out by the Police Narcotics Bureau led to the recovery of these large quantities of drugs.
Police further confirmed that 25 suspects were arrested in connection with these smuggling operations during the same two-month period.
As of June 2025, authorities report that sea-based narcotics trafficking remains a significant challenge, with both the volume of drugs and the number of arrests increasing.
The seized heroin is estimated to be worth approximately Rs. 10.84 billion, while the ice is valued at nearly Rs. 12.16 billion, according to police estimates.
