Colombo Chief Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali yesterday (09) granted bail to Udeni Athukorala of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), who was arrested by officers of the Bribery Commission.
Athukorala was taken into custody on allegations that, during his tenure as Chairman of the Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha between 2018 and 2022, he solicited a bribe of around Rs. 6 million from a businessman engaged in land sales to approve planning permits.
Bribery Commission officials told the court that Athukorala had accepted Rs. 2.5 million on one occasion, Rs. 2 million on another, and an additional Rs. 1.25 million for stone-filling work at his private residence.
Considering the facts presented, the Magistrate ordered the suspect to be released on five personal sureties of Rs. 500,000 each and imposed a travel ban. However, as the bail conditions could not be fulfilled, Athukorala was remanded.
The case will be taken up again on July 18. (Newswire)
