Sajith Premadasa, leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has expressed deep concerns about the escalating violence and suppression of political freedoms in Sri Lanka.
During his speech at the 49th rally for the 2024 Presidential Election, held in Debarawewa, he pointed out that incidents of violence, such as those that occurred at Sri Jayawardenapura University, have resulted in the indefinite closure of the institution. Premadasa blamed the National People’s Power (NPP) and its leader, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, for contributing to this atmosphere of unrest and intimidation.
He further accused the government and its political allies, including Anura Kumara Dissanayake and President Ranil Wickremesinghe, of forming a coalition that protects those responsible for bankrupting the country. Premadasa highlighted the collaboration between these figures, stating that they are attempting to maintain control through violent and oppressive means.
Premadasa also addressed the opposition to SJB’s policies on agricultural loans, fertilizer subsidies, housing programs, and fuel assistance, claiming that the current government and its allies are opposed to these measures that benefit the people. He called on the public to reject this alliance between Ranil and Anura and to support the SJB in order to put an end to what he described as a “fascist” regime.
