Sajith requests Swiss Support to Promote Renewable Energy

A discussion took place yesterday between the Swiss Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Dr. Siri Walt, and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo.

During the meeting, Premadasa requested the Swiss government’s maximum possible assistance for renewable energy generation projects in Sri Lanka. He praised Switzerland’s 2023 legislation for transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy, describing it as a historic step in addressing climate change.

Speaking about Sri Lanka’s recent power outage, Premadasa stated that he and others had repeatedly urged the government to prioritize renewable energy. He explained that system imbalances caused by mismatches in electricity consumption and energy generation led to the blackout. He also emphasized the urgent need for critical infrastructure—Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Pumped Storage Power Plants (PSPP)—which the administration has ignored.

Requesting support from the Swiss Ambassador, Premadasa stressed that the government must take immediate short-term, medium-term, and long-term measures to ensure an uninterrupted power supply and prevent future power cuts.
