Sajith vows to approach new agreement with IMF

Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa has vowed to approach a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stating that the new agreement, under a government led by the Samagi Jana Sandhanaya, will be more humanitarian-centred.

“They say a new government cannot amend the current IMF agreement. We do require to move forward in the future together with the IMF. But we will do so with a humanitarian-based new agreement with the IMF,” he said.

The Opposition Leader further said the IMF had proposed loan repayments from 2033, but the incumbent government had proposed to commence repayment of loans from 2028.

He questioned why the President and government had made such a counter-proposal which would further burden the public.

Stating that the Opposition had met the IMF representatives on multiple occasions, MP Sajith Premadasa said the group had informed the IMF that the current agreement had been made by a government and President that does not have the blessings of the citizens.

MP Sajith Premadasa made the remarks while addressing a political rally of the Samagi Jana Sandhanaya in Mawanella today (Aug 19). (Newswire)
