SC Petition: Pillayan demands Rs. 100 million over Rights Violation

Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, widely known as Pillayan, has filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition before the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, contesting the legality of his recent arrest and detention by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

In his petition, Pillayan seeks a declaration that his arrest and detention were unlawful and requests compensation of Rs. 100 million for the alleged violation of his fundamental rights.

Pillayan was arrested by the CID in Batticaloa on April 8, 2025, and detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for 90 days. While the CID has not publicly disclosed the specific reasons for his arrest, reports suggest it is connected to ongoing investigations into the 2006 enforced disappearance of Professor S. Raveendranath, the former Vice Chancellor of Eastern University.

In his FR petition, Pillayan asserts that his arrest and detention are politically motivated and lack sufficient legal basis. He contends that the CID’s actions constitute a violation of his fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution. The petition seeks a declaration from the Supreme Court affirming this violation and requests Rs. 100 million in compensation for the damages suffered. (Newswire)
