A shooting incident targeting the residence of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha councillor Tharaka Nanayakkara, representing the National People’s Power (NPP), took place early this morning (16), police confirmed. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Police Media Spokesperson said investigations are underway, but no suspects have been arrested so far.
The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened political tensions surrounding the election of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha chairman. The vote was postponed last month following the alleged abduction of two NPP councillors—an incident which remains unresolved, with no arrests made to date.
Opposition parties have accused the government of orchestrating the abductions to disrupt the electoral process and prevent the formation of a new administration.
While the NPP emerged victorious at the Weligama local government election, it lacks the majority needed to form control of the council independently. (Newswire)
