SJB complains to EC over PMD press release

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has brought to the attention of the National Election Commission the violation of election laws by President Ranil Wickremesinghe through the government’s recent announcement of salary incentives for state employees.

In its letter to the Election Commission, the SJB pointed out that the President’s Media Division has issued a statement that the basic salary for public service will be increased by at least 24% for the lowest ranks, with increases ranging from 24% to over 50% for all public service professionals, commencing January 1, 2025.

The SJB pointed out that this document outlines a list of political incentives proposed for government officials by the incumbent President, Ranil Wickramasinghe, who is also a candidate for the 2024 Presidential Election.

Considering that the postal voting period begins tomorrow, 4th September 2024 for the Presidential Election 2024, this list of incentives is a clear violation of the Presidential Elections Act, the SJB pointed out.
