SJB considers No-Confidence Motion against Speaker

Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), is considering bringing a no-confidence motion against Speaker Asoka Sapumal Ranwala if he fails to clarify the authenticity of his academic qualifications, an SJB lawmaker said Wednesday.

SJB MP Ajith P. Perera said the Speaker must make a statement on whether he holds a legitimate doctorate. “If he cannot provide proof and refuses to resign, the SJB will move forward with a no-confidence motion,” Perera said.

The SJB also expressed confidence that MPs from the National People’s Power (NPP), who they believe will act in good conscience, would support the removal of the Speaker if a vote is held.

The controversy surrounding Ranwala’s doctorate escalated after the Parliament website removed the title “Dr.” from his profile. Public and political pressure has mounted for Ranwala to provide evidence of his credentials, but the Speaker has so far denied the allegations and accused critics of a smear campaign.
