Popular actress Damitha Abeyratne who was expected to contest from the Ratnapura District is not among the list of candidates from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) for the 2024 General Election.
It is unclear why Damitha Abeyratne’s name has been exempted from the list, as her candidacy had been confirmed this week. However, the actress’ name is not among the list of candidates submitted by the SJB to the District Secretariat.
Abeyratne, who has been a staunch and vocal supporter of the SJB signed the nomination papers on Tuesday. The actress found out about the removal of her name only after having arrived at the Ratnapura District Secretariat today.
Commenting on the removal of Damitha Abeyratne’s name, SJB Ratnapura District Leader Hesha Vithanage said the Ratnapura District members had made a decision not to include her name.
“Even though Damitha Abeyratne has played a crucial role for the SJB, we decided that we did not want to field a candidate from outside of our district in the election,” he said, explaining the decision. (Newswire)
