SL – Korea Parliamentary Friendship Association : Top role for Handuneththi

Minister Sunil Handunnetti Elected President of Sri Lanka – Republic of Korea Parliamentary Friendship Association

Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunnetti, was elected as the President of the Sri Lanka – Republic of Korea Parliamentary Friendship Association for the Tenth Parliament yesterday (18).

The revival meeting of the Friendship Association was held in Parliament under the patronage of the Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne. The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Sri Lanka, H.E. Miyon Lee, graced the occasion as the guest of honor. Deputy Chairperson of Committees, Hemali Weerasekara, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Members of Parliament, and the Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera were also present at this occasion.

During the meeting, Member of Parliament Nilanthi Kottahachchi, Attorney-at-Law, was elected as the Secretary of the Sri Lanka – Republic of Korea Parliamentary Friendship Association.

Addressing the gathering, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne emphasized the longstanding friendship between the two nations and stated that this gathering marks a renewed chapter in the strong and friendly relationship with the Republic of Korea. He noted that Korea has been an invaluable economic partner, with bilateral trade covering key Sri Lankan exports such as high-quality apparel, Ceylon tea, cinnamon, and gemstones. The Speaker also expressed confidence that the revived Friendship Association will further strengthen the enduring ties between the two countries.

H.E. Miyon Lee, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Sri Lanka, congratulated the newly elected office bearers and acknowledged the pivotal role the Friendship Association has played in strengthening parliamentary ties between the two countries. She expressed her eagerness to work closely with the newly revived association.

The newly elected President Minister Sunil Handunnetti, in his remarks, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Association. He emphasized the Association’s commitment to enhancing mutual understanding, promoting peace, and collaborating on shared goals for the progress of both nations. He also anticipated the support of the Ambassador to achieve the Association’s objectives successfully.

Nilanthi Kottahachchi, Attorney-at-Law, the Secretary of the Association delivering the vote of thanks, requested the support of all Members to ensure the success of the Association’s future activities. (Parliament)
