Sri Lanka is the only Asian nation engaged in bilateral talks with the United States over global tariffs, Deputy Minister of Economic Development Anil Jayantha said.
Speaking during a parliamentary debate on the government’s fiscal strategy, Jayantha said the government hopes to secure a more favourable agreement with the US regarding a 44% tariff imposed earlier this year.
A Sri Lankan delegation visited Washington, D.C., last month for discussions on the tariff, following an invitation from the Office of the United States Trade Representative.
The tariff, part of a series of reciprocal measures introduced by US President Donald Trump, has been paused for 90 days.
During a recent visit to Sri Lanka, IMF Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath too acknowledged the government’s commendable progress on tariff negotiations but emphasized their importance, noting that the United States accounts for 25% of Sri Lanka’s exports. (Newswire)
