Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunneththi, says his speech at the World Economic Forum in China has been distorted by some to suit their views.
Addressing the Parliament today, Minister Handunneththi said that he had only pointed out Sri Lanka’s potential and resources to advance the economy.
“Batticaloa has an airport, but it is not utilized. We need to develop it. Right now, the North and East have the most potential in terms of tourism and industries. This potential would not exist if the economy and law and order had collapsed,” he said.
The Minister also pointed out that there are several challenges which the government is currently faced with. “Our educated citizens and skilled youth are migrating overseas, which is a crisis faced by many Asian countries. Sri Lanka is also attracting drugs from Europe,” the Minister said, adding that while tourism is promoted in the country, drug operations cannot be tolerated.
Minister Handunneththi said that consecutive governments had failed to identify the potential Sri Lanka has in terms of development. He said that the government is presently working towards development goals after identifying the potential in each of these sectors.
“This is what I said at the World Economic Forum. But my speech has been twisted by some on social media,” the minister added. (Newswire)
