Speaker defends IGP appointment

NewsIsland.LK

Responding to a number of allegations in Parliament, the Speaker informed the House that the decision to appoint the Inspector General of Police was both correct and carried out in good faith.

“It may be interpreted in many ways, but it was the correct decision taken after much discussion and consideration, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana told Parliament.

“There are separate provisions for officials appointed with the Constitutional Council and Parliament endorsement. If such an official is removed, there is a special procedure which must be followed. If not the matter must go to the Supreme Court again. Even the President cannot make a decision on this now,” the Speaker said.

He urged MPs to take the matter to court, if they believe that the Speaker was wrong. (Newswire)
