Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage has amended his earlier Gazette notification on Sri Lanka Rugby, just a day after it was issued, in what appears to be a response to legal concerns raised by the media and stakeholders.
The original gazette (No. 2437/32, dated May 22, 2025) suspended the registration of Sri Lanka Rugby and appointed a five-member Working Task Force to adopt a new constitution as recommended by World Rugby. That Task Force included Mr. Priyantha Ekanayake and Mr. Rohan Abayakoon from the National Sports Council.
However, in a revised gazette issued the following day (No. 2437/46, dated May 23, 2025), the Minister removed both Ekanayake and Abayakoon from the Task Force and appointed two new members: Mr. M.H. Marso (Retired DIG) and Mr. Ravindranath Wijenathan.
The revised Task Force now includes:
Mr. M. R. Latiff (Retired Senior DIG) – Chairman
Mr. Suresh Subramaniam (Chairman, National Olympic Committee)
Mr. Dinal Phillips (President’s Counsel)
Mr. M.H. Marso (Retired DIG)
Mr. Ravindranath Wijenathan
While no official reason was stated for the amendment, media reports earlier questioned the legality of the initial gazette and the appointment process, prompting speculation that the move was to address procedural flaws.
