Sri Lanka looks to Powerboating to boost Industry & Tourism

A high-level forum aimed at popularising powerboating in Sri Lanka and harnessing its potential for industrial and tourism growth was recently held at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel, Colombo.

Deputy Minister of Industries and Enterprise Development, Chathuranga Abeysinghe, participated in the event alongside representatives from the Chamber of Marine Industries of Sri Lanka (CMISL), the Lanka Powerboat Association, and the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) — the global governing body for powerboating.

While powerboating has been introduced to Sri Lanka for some time, the sport remains underutilised despite its global reputation as both a recreational activity and a key tourist attraction. The Lanka Powerboat Association has organised several initiatives over the past decade; however, most of these have been independent efforts lacking cohesive national support.

The forum focused on the feasibility of developing a sustainable local manufacturing industry for powerboats and related products, with an eye on international markets. Key discussion areas included the regulatory framework, global recognition, and standards of production quality.

Following the discussions, a joint roadmap is expected to be formulated with the involvement of the Ministry of Industries, the Ministry of Sports, and the Ministry of Tourism to move the initiative forward in a structured and impactful manner. (Newswire)
