The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka today rejected a petition filed by YouTuber Ashen Senarathna challenging the National Election Commission’s decision to reject his nomination to contest the upcoming General Election.
The National Election Commission had previously rejected popular YouTuber Ashen Senarathna’s independent group’s nomination list from the Colombo District.
The Commission disqualified the group, stating that the nomination papers were submitted by an unauthorized individual.
In a video posted on social media at the time, Senaratne expressed frustration, saying he was present but asked to wait outside, leading to another candidate submitting the papers.
Commenting on the matter, the Election Commission said nominations must be handed in by specific individuals, and failure to follow this rule results in disqualification.
Thereafter, Ashen Senarathna filed a case in the Supreme Court last week, contesting the Election Commission’s decision. (Newswire)
