The family of Charith Dilshan, the Sabaragamuwa University student who reportedly died by suicide, has made an emotional plea for justice, claiming their son was subjected to severe ragging that led to his death.
Speaking to reporters, Charith’s mother said her son was humiliated and physically assaulted during a visit to the university on April 26 to resolve an issue related to his Mahapola scholarship. “They harassed him, beat him with belts, pushed him… When he came home, he wouldn’t even look at me. Later we found out they had stripped his clothes too. He didn’t betray anyone. But he had written that he had mental stress for no reason,” she said through tears.
“I beg that what happened to my son should never happen to another child. Please give him justice,” she added.
Charith’s aunt also recounted that he confided in her after returning home on April 28, explaining the trauma he endured. “He told me how badly they treated him—how they tied him up, made him wear shorts, dragged him into a room and hit his head against the wall in front of others. Tears welled up in his eyes as he spoke.”
Charith’s father revealed that his son had faced ragging throughout his two years at the university. “We had high hopes that our son, who was studying technical engineering and aspired to work at Laxapana Power Plant, would come home proudly wearing his uniform. Instead, we brought him home like this,” he said.
Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing following a complaint made by a fellow student to the Samanalawewa Police, alleging that Charith’s death was linked to ragging. The Ministry of Higher Education has appointed a special team to probe the incident and pledged strict action if ragging is confirmed.
Ragging remains a criminal offence in Sri Lanka, and authorities reiterated that those found guilty will face prosecution.
