Supreme Court rules Ranil’s 2022 State of Emergency ‘Unconstitutional’
The Supreme Court has ruled that the islandwide State of Emergency declared by then Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe on July 17, 2022, was unconstitutional and violated fundamental rights. A majority of the bench found the emergency regulations arbitrary and invalid, stating they disproportionately restricted civil freedoms during the Aragalaya protests. The court also ordered the government to cover legal costs for the petitioners.
Parliament moves ahead with process to remove IGP Deshabandu
Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne informed Parliament that steps are underway to remove IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon following a committee’s finding that he is guilty of multiple charges, including abuse of power and involvement in a Weligama shooting. The Speaker tabled the committee report on July 22, and a resolution for removal will be listed in the Order Paper, as required by law. A parliamentary vote will follow after the mandatory waiting period.
