Renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Maheshi Wijeratne of the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital who was arrested earlier today by the Bribery Commission, has been remanded until June 24 by Colombo Magistrate Court.
According to the Bribery Commission, Dr. Wijeratne and two others have been arrested for allegedly selling certain medicines at higher prices to patients through her private medical institution, while deliberately failing to procure those medicines for the government hospital.
The Commission stated that the alleged scheme caused financial losses amounting to Rs. 30 million to patients.
Dr. Wijeratne had previously been accused by former MP Hirunika Premachandra of involvement in the Duminda Silva medical cover-up, a charge she has denied. (Newswire)
