UAE pull off rare strategy in T20 World Cup Qualifier win over Qatar

In a bizarre turn of events at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier, UAE delivered both fireworks and tactical ingenuity to secure a thumping 163-run win over Qatar.

Batting first, UAE’s openers put on a mammoth 192-run stand in just 16 overs. With rain threatening to cut the match short, UAE were keen to end their innings early. However, as declarations are not permitted in T20 internationals, UAE’s players resorted to an unusual workaround: each subsequent batter padded up, sprinted to the crease, and immediately retired out upon arrival, forcing a rapid end to the innings.

The unorthodox move made for a surreal scorecard but proved effective. In reply, Qatar were skittled for just 29 runs in 11.1 overs, sealing a dominant UAE victory.

Ahmed Raza, UAE’s coach, has been lauded for his inventive thinking, ensuring the team adapted swiftly to the situation.

“All’s well that ends well” might be the motto of the day—but it’s safe to say this match will be remembered for its out-of-the-box tactics as much as its result. (Newswire)
