Uncontrollable Crowd in Kandy: Military steps in, New move from Police

Police have introduced a special identification tag system from tonight (23) to manage the massive crowd gathered in Kandy for the “Siri Dalada Vandana”, with nearly 400,000 devotees already present, according to officials.

Speaking at a joint media briefing, Central Province Senior DIG Lalith Pathinayake and Kandy–Matale DIG Sudath Masinghe said the queues are so long that even allowing 100,000 people per day would take at least three more days to clear the current numbers.

Due to the uncontrollable situation, the military has been deployed to assist with crowd control.

Authorities are urging the public not to travel to Kandy over the next two days.

Meanwhile, police confirmed that a person who was in the queue passed away after being admitted to hospital due to a heart attack.

Special train services from Colombo to Kandy, earlier arranged for the event, have also been cancelled due to the situation. (Newswire)
