The National Water Supply and Drainage Board’s (NWSDB) SMS gateway appears to have been compromised, with several customers reporting identical messages demanding a Bitcoin ransom.
Multiple users on social media confirmed receiving texts from the official NWSDB short code, stating: “Your Waterboard account has been hacked by Alpha Team… Your data can recover if we got 1.5 BTC.”
The messages, which include a Bitcoin wallet address, were sent from the same port number typically used for official billing and complaint updates. Screenshots show previous legitimate communications from NWSDB followed by the ransom note, raising serious concerns about the breach’s extent.
It remains unclear what specific data has been accessed or leaked. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement. Users are urged not to engage with the message and to report any suspicious activity to the relevant officials. (Newswire)
